TaylorMade’s top players seem to have taken a shine to their Spider putter design and several variations have appeared in the last couple of years, the most popular being the Spider Tour putter that Jason Day had a hand in creating.
At the 2018 Players Championship Dustin Johnson, who had been using a black version of the Spider Tour, has been seen with a new variation called the Spider Mini.
The head is 15% smaller but still aims to deliver the same stability from a high MOI head as the originals by using steel weights cast into the back of the head.
This creates a more compact look at the back of the putter instead of the two weight pods that looked a little like mini rockets on the rear of the Spider Tour.
The alignment lines have varied in the past on the Spider putters from a single line to none at all. On the Spider Mini, TaylorMade has gone for a T-Sightline which is white on the Tour Red model and black on the Diamond Silver version.
The T-Sightline aims to be the same depth from the face as a blade putter so that players who want something with a higher MOI can move across without feeling that they are using a big mallet.
The face has 3� of loft and uses a thicker Pure Roll insert than before that is made from aluminium for a firmer feel and better sound and is also colour coordinated.
The retail launch is not until June 2018, but when you do get your hands on one they will hold a Super Stroke Pistol GTR 1.0 grip as standard.
The trend these days seems to be towards higher MOI mallets for better players that are not too big and with the Spider Mini, TaylorMade are rolling with the market.
