A new set of irons alone usually costs around £1,200. In this video, we see if that same budget can cover a full bag instead – driver, hybrid, irons, wedge and putter.
To do this, we teamed up with our partners at Clubhouse Golf to find out whether you can still pick up some great bargains on brand new golf clubs if you look a little harder.
There’s a lot of talk at the moment about the rising cost of golf equipment, and just as much about buying second-hand as a workaround. This video takes a different angle: sticking to brand new clubs, but being smart about where the budget goes.

What we picked…
Driver: PXG 0311 Gen 6 – £199
A few years old now, but still a great-looking, well-specced driver at less than half the price of the newest releases. I still managed to hit a few great drives too, with distances that are just as far as my current Titleist GTS4. Very impressive for the price.
Hybrid: Ping G430 19° – £209
Standing in for a fairway wood, this is the priciest club in the bag – but Ping hybrids are consistently forgiving and easy to launch. We picked this over a fairway wood as it’s a little more versatile, but at 19 degrees there is still enough distance that you could hit it off the tee or for longer approaches.
Irons: Cobra Darkspeed 5-GW – £499
Seven clubs, 5-iron through gap wedge, and unsurprisingly the biggest chunk of the budget. Game-improvement tech throughout for extra forgiveness and ball speed, although these could still be use by high single-figure golfers.
Wedge: Takomo SF002 58° – £99
The one direct-to-consumer pick in the bag, and proof that you don’t need to spend £150+ on a wedge to get a proper players’ finish and full-groove face.
Putter: Cleveland HB Soft 2 8S – £119
An oversized blade with milled face, which added slightly more forgiveness and more than held its own on some tricky greens.
Final total: £1,125 – £75 under budget. The bag features 11 clubs rather than a full 14 (a hybrid instead of a fairway wood, a gap wedge instead of a 4-iron), but every club is tested and reviewed out on the course, including a driver that outperformed its price tag by some distance.
If you are on a budget, 11 clubs is more than enough to get out and still play great golf. This video also proves that you can still find great value new clubs online – even if they aren’t this year’s models.
