What’s In The Bag: Rory McIlroy

Who? 35 year-old Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy.

What? The Masters, to win his 5th major and complete the career grand slam.

Where? Augusta National, Georgia

How? After 14 years of heartbreak at Augusta, Rory McIlroy finally slipped on the Green Jacket and completed the career Grand Slam. Rory defeated Justin Rose in a sudden-death playoff after a rollercoaster round.

McIlroy opened the final round with a double bogey and dropped out of the early lead, but clawed his way back with five birdies on the day. Despite a bogey at the last and a nervy mistake on 13, he forced a playoff at 11 under par.

Back on the 18th tee for the playoff, McIlroy split the fairway leaving himself 125 yards in. Almost identical position to regulation play, McIlroy managed to hit the perfect approach. Pitching his ball past the flag and letting the contours of the 18th green do its work – leaving himself three feet away from completing the career Grand Slam.

When Rose failed to hole his valiant effort, McIlroy sealed the win — and sealed his place in golf history.
