Ping may be better known for their iconic Anser putters, forgiving irons and straight-flying drivers, but they also do a really great range of clothing too, which I have always found to offer pretty good value for money.

With winter golf now well and truly upon us, we’re looking at waterproof jackets and first up is the Taran 3L. This is Ping’s most waterproof jacket, containing a number of different technologies to protect golfers from the elements.
Who Is It Aimed At?
Anyone who plays golf in the UK during the winter! A waterproof jacket is one of the first things on the checklist for golfers who play during the colder months, as they can keep you warm and dry.
This jacket in particular was great for colder days thanks to the slightly thicker, heavier feel, and at an RRP of 225 it is pretty good value for money compared to brands such as Galvin Green.
The Tech
As you’d expect from Ping, they’ve done things properly with the new Taran 3L Jacket. Designed to perform in wet weather, it features a seam-sealed construction and three-layer stretch waterproof fabric, along with a distinctive Ping printed inner.

It’s designed with an ‘abrasion tape detail’ on the zip pockets for durability, adjustable shock cord hem, and adjustable cuff tabs for a personalised fit.

A two-way front zip, and two front zip pockets, are designed for versatility and practicality, with a Ping eye logo on the front shoulder and Eye Mark logo on the back collar.

The full list of features are as follows:
- Fully seam-sealed
- Three layer stretch waterproof fabric with PING Eye Mark printed inner
- Abrasion tape detail at zip pockets
- Adjustable shock cord hem
- Adjustable cuff tabs
- Two-way centre front zip
- Two front zip pockets
- PING Eye logo to front shoulder and stamped Eye Mark logo to back collar
- Wear with Engineered to Play Waterproof Trouser to form a waterproof suit
- S-XXXL
Ping Taran 3L Jacket Review
The look of the jacket is classic Ping. It may not be the most modern or eye-catching design, but it exudes a classy simplicity that will appeal to a wide range of golfers.

It is available in plain black as well as a slightly more vibrant blue, a colour Ping has frequently across their products in recent years. Both colour options should pair well with most golfers’ wardrobes.
The jacket feels quite sturdy. It isn’t particularly heavy, but compared to theGalvin Green Ames Jacket, which I reviewed recently, it feels a bit more substantial. It also has a relatively long fit, both in the arms and the body. There is a couple of extra inches of material below the bottom of the zip, which is somewhat unusual. I found that this made the zipper a bit more difficult to use.

There are adjustable tabs to help manage the fit on the arms, but personally, I prefer a shorter golf jacket as it provides more freedom during the swing.

In terms of performance, the jacket is very good. It is comfortable, warm, weatherproof, and surprisingly easy to swing in despite its slightly larger fit. It’s clear that Ping has put effort into details like the seams and zips, as they are unobtrusive, which is a great feature.
Ping Taran 3L Waterproof Jacket Verdict
It’s very rare that Ping let you down when it comes to golf equipment, and this jacket is no different. It’s warm, comfortable, looks smart and does a great job of keeping you protected from the elements.

In an ideal world, I would’ve like the fit to have been a little bit shorter so as to make sure you can swing completely unobstructed, but that is just personal preference.

The Black and Blue colourways both look good, although a women’s option may have also been nice too. Overall, for an RRP of 225 I don’t think you can go wrong with this jacket, and it does come in at a pretty competitive price point too which is a big plus.
Would I Use It?
I would, especially on colder days as I was really impressed with the warmth that the jacket offered.
