Who? 36 year-old Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy.
What? The Amgen Irish Open, nine years after his first Irish Open win.
Where? The K Club, Ireland.
How? After a thrilling eagle finish on the 72nd hole, Rory McIlroy managed to beat Joakim Lagergren on the 3rd playoff hole.
Starting the final round four shots back, he surged into contention with trademark ball-striking but still trailed Joakim Lagergren, who had set the clubhouse target at 17-under. Needing something special on the 72nd hole, McIlroy delivered one of the moments of the season, holing a 27-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th to force a playoff and send the home crowd into raptures.
The drama didn’t stop there. Both players matched birdies on the first two playoff holes before Lagergren faltered, finding water with his approach on the third. McIlroy seized the opportunity, safely finding the green and two-putting for birdie to seal the win and spark wild celebrations. It marked his first victory since completing the career Grand Slam at Augusta earlier this year, earned him over £1 million in prize money, and further strengthened his Race to Dubai lead.
Reflecting afterwards, McIlroy described the eagle putt as one of the “coolest moments” of his career and dedicated the victory to the Irish fans, who will be hoping it’s the perfect springboard into the Ryder Cup and BMW PGA Championship.
