Who? 31 year-old Englishman, Matthew Fitzpatrick.
What? The 2025 DP World Tour Championship, his third DP World Tour Championship victory.
Where? The Earth Course: Jumeirah Golf Estates
How? For most of the Sunday it seemed Career Grand Slam winner, Rory McIlroy would retain his 2024 DP World Tour Championship title as he held a two-shot lead midway through the round, however bogeys on the 12th and 16th saw him drop out of the lead. Fitzpatrick meanwhile, was calmly putting together a bogey-free closing round of 66. Three birdies in the opening five were followed by a run of eight pars before three birdies in his final five holes, including one on the last, thrust the 2022 US Open champion into a clubhouse lead on 18 under par.
The Englishman eventually beat the eventual 2025 Race to Dubai Champion, McIlroy, in a playoff by making par on the 18th, the first playoff hole. McIlroy, who found the water off the tee by hitting driver made bogey, whereas Fitzpatrick stuck to his ever-reliable game plan, finding the fairway with 3-wood, playing the dramatic par 5 as a 3-shotter and claiming a well deserved victory over the Northern Irishman.
