The Idea Super S Hybrid is what Adams are placing their hat on in the UK for 2013. It actually has quiet a large head and looks a bit like a mini fairway wood. When you put it next to the 3 wood then heel to toe there is not much difference in the size between them. There is more depth on the 3-wood front to back but even so, the Super S is a very generous hybrid indeed.
The design is very interesting as there are slots on the top and bottom of the head. Adams have been perfecting slots for a number of years before their parent company TaylorMade. The crown also features an all white finish that also reflects this heritage, although the graphics are not as much in your face and it does look very good at address.
The two slots allow the face to flex at impact to give you a little bit more ball speed and power. It also makes it very forgiving right across the face and I was able to hit a wide variety of shots with the Super S hybrid. The feel of stability at impact was the stand out feature for me as wherever you hit it on the face, it seemed to provide a very solid shot.
There is a wide range of lofts from 15 degrees for the 1 hybrid up to 28 degrees for the 6 hybrid and they seem to be very different clubs across this range. The 1 and 2 hybrids seem to be for low handicap players who want something delivering a more penetrating flight.
The 3 and 4 hybrids are for the majority of golfers who want an alternative to long irons that is more forgiving. The 5 and 6 hybrids are great for those who struggle with irons. It doesn’t balloon it too much even though it does give a high flight. All of them do a great job of getting the ball going forward and the size of the head gives you a lot of confidence if you need it.
Generally the flight of the Super S hybrid is higher than most but on some of the lower lofts and with the right shaft you can get a good penetrating flight. With the 3-hybrid and an extra stiff shaft I was getting a lovely boring flight through the wind.
The shafts do feel quite light and seem a little softer than their flexes indicate so it will be very important to get fitted for the right loft and flex to get the trajectory and distance you require.
Adams are rightly renowned for their hybrids and the Super S is a worthy member of their family and very good value for money.
