Who? 35 year-old American Gary Woodland.
What? The 2019 US Open, his 4th PGA Tour victory.
Where? Pebble Beach Golf Links, Pebble Beach, California.
How? It was a par-saving clinic over the four days for Woodland, who consistently found ways to get his ball up and down when seemingly in trouble. A pair of 69s over the weekend was good enough for a three stroke victory over double-defending champion Brooks Koepka who birdied four of his first five holes, whilst European hopes Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose faded. Woodland sealed the victory by holing a 30 foot putt for birdie on the 72nd green before taking in the applause on the famous golf links.
Following the victory, Woodland said:
I've worked hard my entire life and have been surrounded by amazing people. I always wanted to be successful. I didn't know what I was going to do, but I fell in love with golf. And it's transcended into today.
