Wilson Golf has announced a modern update to their player’s iron range which evoke memories of the brand’s heydays, where their clubs were the tools used by some of the game’s greatest ever players in Hogan, Snead and Arnold Palmer.
The new Wilson Staff Model forged blade irons immediately appear as something of a throwback to those times, with a simple and classic design based on previous Wilson models, whilst being created thanks to the input of PGA Tour player and Wilson staffer Brendan Steele.
Jon Pergande, Global Innovation Manager at Wilson Golf, said of the release:
Through precise performance and visually pleasing aesthetics, the Staff Model irons combine the look and feel demanded by today’s best players. Brendan’s influence on these irons had huge impact and with the phenomenal expertise of the Wilson LABS team, we knew these irons were going to be an extremely polished product.
The Staff Model irons utilise a similar shape to the FG Tour 100, the iron of choice for many of Wilson’s Tour staff. They also retain some of the same features, including the knurling of the hosel and Fluid Fee Hosel construction, which redistributes weight and enhances feel.
Feel and control is also provided by the milled face, whilst the forged 8620 carbon steel comes complete with a high polish mirror finish for a premium look.
When Wilson asked Steele for his input on a potential development to their forged iron line, he stressed the importance of modernising without sacrificing performance, and pointed to a thinner top line at address as one of the key aesthetic features he wanted to be implemented.
Steele said of his involvement in the development process:
To be able to provide my insight on the next generation to FG Tour 100 irons was an experience I’ll never forget. We crafted the new Staff Model irons to have a similar look as the FG Tour 100s, which was vital as I continue to evaluate changes to my equipment.
The irons continue their classical theme thanks to traditional lofting. With a 7 iron coming in at 34 degrees, reflecting their purpose is not for distance and forgiveness, but for enhanced feel and workability for better players to be able to enjoy their shot-making.
The Wilson Staff Model irons will be available in the Spring, and come fitted with True Temper Dynamic Golf Shafts and Golf Pride Tour Velvet Grips. They are priced at £899 for a 3-PW set and are available in both left and right handed options.
