Who? 30 year-old Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy
What? The 2019 RBC Canadian Open, his 16th PGA Tour victory and second of the season
Where? Hamilton Golf & Country Club, Hamilton, Ontario
How? Starting the final round with a share of the lead, McIlroy charged ahead by reeling off five birdies in his first seven holes, and didn't let up from there. Gaining 15 strokes on the field from tee to green, and ranking sixth in the field for putting (often the weakness in his game), a short eagle putt at the 17th meant that he required a birdie at the last for a 59. Though he eventually made a bogey, he signed for a stunning 61 and put himself firmly among the favourites for the US Open at Pebble Beach.
Following the victory, McIlroy said:
I said from the start that I wanted to be aggressive. I played with so much freedom yesterday and I just wanted to keep that going. Going forward for this season, to play the way I did in a final round like this, I'm going to take a lot from this. I'm excited for the US Open next week.
