Who? 26 year-old Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick.
What? The 2020 DP World Tour Championship, his sixth European Tour victory.
Where? Earth Course, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Dubai.
How? Fitzpatrick went into the final round tied for the lead but a flying start, with 5 birdies in his first 6 holes, pushed him in front early on. When Patrick Reed and Laurie Canter faltered in the closing stages, Lee Westwood became Fitzpatrick’s closest competitor after making birdie on two of his final three holes. Westwood’s closing 68 was enough to give him the Race to Dubai win, and Fitzpatrick two-putted for par on his final hole to take tournament victory in a thrilling final round.
Following the victory, Fitzpatrick said:
I’m just trying to improve every year. I really set high standards of myself and I am honestly very hard on myself and my team will all tell you the same thing. To be here at 26, and I don’t know what this win has taken me to in the world, potentially my highest year-end ranking, I’m very, very happy.
