Ping's i irons are an addition to their high performance range for players looking for a club that gives a level of workability and ball flight control without sacrificing forgiveness.
The i iron is the first Ping model to be constructed from 431 stainless steel, a compound with a high strength-to weight ratio and a softer feel.
The lighter weight of the 431 stainless steel, with savings of 3-4 grams, allows for more weight to be moved to the perimeter of the club for a higher MOI and increased forgiveness and accuracy.
This is also enhanced by a deeper position of the Custom Tuning Port, that includes an elastomer CTP weight, lining up with the optimum impact area to promote a more solid sound and feel through the ball.
The i irons also feature a progressive set design, with the longer irons having larger head sizes and low/back CG positions to add forgiveness and distance to these harder to hit shots. The 3 to 7 irons also feature a tungsten toe weight that again makes them easier to hit whilst the shorter irons and wedges have smaller heads to promote precision and control.
The ability to work the ball has been promoted with a head and hosel geometry design that promotes trajectory control to allow better players to hit precise shots.
Featuring wider soles than both the i25 and S55 irons, an optimised bounce profile on the soles of the clubs gives the i irons excellent performance characteristics across all turf conditions, allowing the club to travel through impact easily for a solid and consistent strike.
The i irons feature a thin top line, 5.2% thinner than the Ping i25, and minimal offset to give a confidence-inspiring look at address with the lengths and lofts optimised to increase distance and maintain proper gapping for a powerful, higher ball flight to help the ball stop quicker on the greens.
The i irons come with Ping's CFS Distance steel shaft or CFS Graphite shafts as standard with additional after-market shaft options of Dynamic Gold, Project X, XP 95 and Nippon Modus 105 available at no upcharge.
John Solheim, Ping Chairman & CEO, explains the thinking behind the i iron:
The i iron is a players-style design that appeals to golfers of all skill levels because of its all-around performance. It has a great look and provides workability, trajectory control and just the right amount of forgiveness. It’s already in the bags of several of our tour professionals.
